IT's Capacity to Innovate a Hot Topic For Today's CIO

Leading IT executives tackle critical issues facing IT at Planview's Annual CIO Advisory Council

AUSTIN, Texas — May 9, 2006 —Senior IT executives from several of the world's largest companies including financial institutions as well as from the oil and gas, healthcare and retail industries, gathered last month at the Annual Planview CIO Advisory Council to address the biggest challenges around "IT's Capacity to Innovate." Presentations from ExxonMobil Corporation, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and DHL Express addressed leading IT management practices from performance and process, to transformation and innovation. Planview, the market leader in portfolio management solutions, plays host every year to some of the industry's most successful IT leaders, giving them an intimate forum to share ideas and practices with their peers.

More than 43 percent of the attendees surveyed this year cited performance measurement as their largest challenge today, second only to aligning IT with the business objectives of their companies. When asked if they could free up 5 percent of their IT budget by eliminating unnecessary spending, 60 percent said they would re-allocate their IT budget to fund more innovative IT projects to be more competitive.

Many IT leaders attending the event stressed the importance of tackling these challenges head on by managing IT as a business and applying business disciplines within the broader IT environments.

"More than ever, IT management is being held accountable for the financial and staff performance of their programs," said Planview CEO Patrick Durbin. "The leaders in this industry are learning that they have to communicate with their internal clients in financial terms and with an emphasis on business value. The discipline of portfolio management is the ideal platform for IT to become a proactive, strategic and innovative partner with the business."

Other topics of discussion at the Council included:

  • Marketing the Value of IT
  • Increasing IT's Influence in the Strategic Planning Process
  • Driving Adoption of New Business Processes Worldwide

Mark Lutchen, Senior Practice Partner for the IT Effectiveness Practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers and author of Managing IT as a Business: A Survival Guide for CEOs, delivered the keynote, " Maximizing IT's Capacity to Innovate: Managing IT as a Business."

According to Mark Lutchen, "IT has not been able to innovate because of a number of factors, including globalization, fragmentation, and a lack of flexibility. By better managing IT like a business, CIOs can mitigate business risk and drive innovation through business empathy, visibility and transparency into IT spend and performance, and change absorption."

CIO Advisory Council attendee Tai Truong, IT Program Management Office at Citi Cards North America added, "the Planview CIO Advisory Council was a success from my perspective. I particularly enjoyed hearing from Planview about the application of portfolio management to drive IT innovation; the successful global implementation story from ExxonMobil was motivational; and the attendee roundtable sessions were very informative with value takeaways I can apply immediately within my team. But, most of all Planview's attention to their customers' needs and concerns confirms Planview was the right choice for Citigroup."

The Planview CIO Advisory Council is an annual, exclusive event and part of Planview's, highly-successful series designed to bring together top IT leaders in an open forum to address best practices, hot issues and the state of the IT industry. The next CIO Advisory Council will take place in Spring of 2007. For more information contact Planview at market@planview.com or 1.800.856.8600.
